YELLOW-BELLIED TERRAPIN

(Trachemys scripta scripta)

Description

Named after its striking yellow belly, this species also has yellow markings around the face and on the neck and legs. Fully grown, these terrapins can reach up to 30cm in shell length.

Habitat & Distribution

Freshwater habitats (swaps, rivers, lakes etc.) in eastern and central North America. This species has been introduced into the wild on several other continents and its range is increasing.

Diet

This species is not a fussy eater and will take both plant matter and small invertebrates. Juveniles tend to favour aquatic invertebrates whilst adults have a more plant-based diet.

Conservation Status

Least concern.
