Many red-footed tortoises develop a distinct constriction around the waist of their shell as they reach maturity. When viewed from above, this can give the appearance of an hourglass figure. This is more pronounced in males than females.
During courtship and mating, the male red-footed tortoise will make a clucking noise that sounds just like a hen!
In their countries of origin, red-footed tortoises are considered a food source and are often hunted for their meat.
