RED-FOOTED TORTOISE

(Chelonoidis carbonaria)

Description

These tortoises get their name from the brightly coloured scales on the legs and head. These can vary in colour from yellow through to bright cherry red. Red-footed tortoises generally reach a size of around 10 – 15 inches. Both males and females reach a similar size although males tend to be heavier.

Habitat & Distribution

These tortoises are found throughout Central America and northern South America. They can also be found on several of the Caribbean islands.

Diet

These tortoises are mainly herbivores; eating a variety of plants, grasses, flowers and fruits. However they are occasionally seen taking other items of food such as carrion, small invertebrates and mushrooms.
