Black Tailed Marmoset

BLACK-TAILED MARMOSET

(Mico melanurus)

Description

The black-tailed marmoset is a small monkey found in parts of the Amazon rainforest. They are a dark greyish brown on the body with a lighter underside and a much darker, black tail. Unlike other marmosets, they have a stripe of yellow or white fur running down the thigh. Claws on their fingers help them climb trees in the rainforest.

Habitat & Distribution

These small monkeys are found in rainforests in Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil. They occur further south than most marmosets and are the southernmost species of the genus Mico, even occuring naturally outside of the Amazon rainforest.

Diet

Tree sap is an important part of the black-tailed marmoset’s diet, but they also eat fruits, pollen, flowers and some small animals.

Conservation Status

Near threatened.
