SABAH’S THORNY STICK INSECT

(Aretaon asperrimus)

Description

These stick insects are dark brown in colour and both sexes are wingless. Their bodies are covered in ‘thorns’ including their legs and heads. Their eyes are mottled yellow and brown. The females of this species average at about 8cm in length while the males are smaller at 5.5cm.

Habitat & Distribution

Thorny stick insects are native to an area in Borneo called ‘Sabah’, which is where they get their name. They can also be found in the Philippines.

Diet

These stick insects are herbivores and feed on a variety of plant material.

Life Span

Thorny stick insects will live for an estimated 8-12 months. Females will live slightly longer than the males.
