Mexican fireleg tarantulas are listed under appendix II of CITES for legal protection from the exotic pet trade.
(Brachypelma boehmei)
Commonly known as the Mexican fireleg, they are New World tarantula, with a black abdomen and bright red or orange legs. They can grow up to 17cm. They are a nocturnal species and are sometimes seen to be active at dusk and dawn too. They have quite a nervous temperament and can flick hairs to warn away danger.
They are found in dry, scrubland areas along the pacific coast of south- west Mexico. A ground-dwelling species, they dig their own burrows to shelter in.
These tarantulas are carnivorous, feeding on medium sized insects and other invertebrates.
Males can live up to 8 years, females a staggering 25 years!
