Madagascan hissing cockroaches are oval in shape and shiny chestnut brown through to dark brown in colour. Males have a large set of horns on the head and both males and females have hooks on their feet, which make them excellent climbers.
Found amongst leaf litter on the forest floor in Madagascar’s rainforests.
Primarily plant material and rotting fruit although they are opportunistic and will eat anything they can find including decaying animals and animal dung!

As their name suggests, Madagascan hissing cockroaches are able to emit a loud hissing noise. They do this when startled – it is thought that they are impersonating a snake and hoping that animals will stay away. Males also hiss at each other when fighting over females. The male with the loudest hiss wins.
Cockroaches are some of the most primitive insects and have lived on earth for 350 million years!
