Leopard geckos are small, ground-dwelling lizards – similar in appearance to the African fat tailed gecko. Leopard geckos tend to be yellow with black spots, just like a leopard, however other colour forms are common in captivity. Youngsters are much brighter than adults.

Unlike most geckos, both leopard geckos and African fat tailed geckos possess moving eyelids.
Leopard geckos, like other species of gecko, are able to drop their tail as a defence mechanism. This is thought to work as a distraction whilst the gecko makes its getaway.
