Unlike all other tortoises in this genus, which have five toes, Horsefield’s tortoises only have four on their front limbs.
These tortoises live in areas of huge temperature difference between the summer and winter months. They will often aestivate (become dormant in order to avoid extremely hot, dry periods) in the summer, emerge at the end of summer to feed before hibernating (becoming dormant to avoid extreme cold) over the winter, emerging again in spring.
