GIANT AFRICAN LAND SNAIL

(Achatina fulica)

Description

Most species of giant African land snail reach between 10cm and 20cm in length although some breeds can get as large as 30cm! These snails have dark brown shells with striped markings that can vary from pale yellow to white. Some species can also have reddish markings. The body of the snail tends to be a mottled brown colour. Albino individuals will have a paler coloured shell with a white body.

Habitat & Distribution

Giant African land snails can be found south of the Sahara Desert throughout wet, tropical regions of Africa.

Diet

These snails will feed on plant matter (both living and dead) from a variety of different plant species with some snail species eating over 500 different types of plant. Their diet includes crops such as cabbage and their tendency to eat these crops means they are often considered pests.
