CORN SNAKE

(Pantherophis guttatus)

Description

These animals are also known as the red corn snake as wild individuals are often dark orangey-red in colour. However, due to their increased popularity in the pet trade there are now a wide variety of colour forms seen in this species. Corn snakes are slender snakes but can reach over 5ft in length.

Habitat & Distribution

These snakes may be found in woodlands, grasslands, farmlands and in farm buildings in eastern and south-eastern North America. The name corn snake derives from the fact that they used to often be seen in corn sheds.

Diet

Small mammals such as mice.

Conservation Status

Least concern.
