BEARDED DRAGON

(Pogona vitticeps)

Description

Bearded dragons are fairly large lizards and can grow up to 24 inches long (including their tails). The colour of this species varies from soft tan to a golden or even orangey-brown, which helps them to camouflage in desert habitats. They have a rough looking beard under the chin, which they can puff out and change colour in order to communicate with other bearded dragons and animals that may be seen as a threat.

Habitat & Distribution

Sub-tropical woodlands, savannahs, deserts and grasslands in central Australia.

Diet

Bearded dragons are opportunistic omnivores. They will take whatever is available to them including leaves, insects, spiders and sometimes even small mammals.
