Silver dollars will reach an average of 15cm in length when fully grown. They have round silver bodies, and the males tend to be slightly smaller than the females. The fins of the male will grow a little longer with the anal fin often being tinged red.
This species of silver dollar is endemic to the Tapajós river basin in Brazil. Other species of silver dollars can be found in streams and rivers throughout South America.
Silver dollars are mainly herbivorous; however, they will occasionally feed on animal matter such as worms and shrimp.
These fish may live for up to 10 years.
