Description

Koi are ornamental varieties of the common carp developed in Japan during the 19th century. There are many variations of koi, distinguished by colours, patterns and scalation. Adults can grow up to 43 inches long!

Habitat & Distribution

Like all other varieties of carp, koi like freshwater environments. As a product of artificial selection, koi do not occur naturally in the wild. Therefore, the man-made koi pond has become their “natural” habitat. If koi “escape” into the wild, they are likely to crossbreed with carps. Diet

Aquatic insects, crustaceans, plant matter and Koi pellets.
