BOA CONSTRICTOR

(Boa constrictor)

Description

Boa constrictors are a South American species of non-venomous snake. As their name suggests they kill their prey by wrapping around it and squeezing, essentially suffocating the animal to death. Boa constrictors can reach up to 14ft in length. Females are generally larger than males and geographic origin will affect size.

Habitat & Distribution

Boa constrictors are nocturnal inhabitants of Central and South American rainforests. They are often found on the forest floor or in the understory layer of the rainforest.

Diet

Boa constrictors will eat a wide variety of prey including rodents, lizards, birds, bats and even small monkeys. They are skilled hunters and can snatch bats out of the air as they fly past.

Conservation Status

Least concern.
