DESERT KINGSNAKE

(Lampropeltis getula splendida)

Description

This is one of several sub-species of kingsnakes. They are black in colour with yellow markings. The head of the kingsnake is rounded and the same width as the body. Adult desert kingsnakes can reach 4ft in length.

Habitat & Distribution

Found in brushland, scrubland and grasslands, often close to water, in Mexico and the USA.

Diet

A variety of birds, small mammals, lizards and even small snakes.

Conservation Status

Least concern.
